Before you ever look at a trailer, you need to understand your own vehicle's limits. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum total weight your vehicle can handle — that includes the vehicle itself, passengers, cargo, fuel, and any tongue weight from the trailer. Understand the Key Terms
There are a handful of terms you'll encounter when calculating safe towing capacity for your new Mitsubishi. Your vehicle's curb weight is its weight with a full tank of gas but no passengers or cargo — your starting baseline. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the maximum your vehicle can weigh when fully loaded, and your payload capacity is the difference between those two numbers, representing how much weight you can add in people, gear, and tongue weight. Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer's hitch exerts on your vehicle, and as a general rule it should fall between 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's total loaded weight. Finally, the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) is the total weight of the trailer plus everything loaded inside it.
The Core Formula
Here's the simple calculation our service advisors walk customers through. Maximum Trailer Weight is the Rated Towing Capacity minus the Tongue Weight. But you also need to verify your payload isn't exceeded. Add up your passengers, cargo inside the vehicle, and the tongue weight of the trailer. That total must stay under your payload capacity. Say your Mitsubishi Outlander has a 2,000-lb. towing capacity1 and an 1,100-lb. payload rating1. You're towing a loaded camper that weighs 1,700 lbs. The tongue weight is 15 percent of 1,700, which is 255 lbs. Add two passengers and 100 lbs. of gear inside the vehicle, and your total payload use is 705 lbs., which is safely under the 1,100-lb. limit. You're good to go for your journey to the Liberty Reservoir.
Don't Forget the Trailer's Weight Distribution
An improperly loaded trailer is a safety hazard regardless of your vehicle's ratings. Too much weight at the rear causes trailer sway; too much at the front strains your hitch and reduces steering control. Aim to place 60 percent of the load in the front half of the trailer.
Check Your Hitch Rating Too
Even if your vehicle can tow 2,000 lbs., your hitch has its own rating. Always match the hitch class to your actual towing needs, and never exceed the lower of the two ratings.

After I got set at the table 2000 was mysteriously added. Found out it was extended warranty which is optional. I reached out to them I talked to Shaun on the phone but my childs name was placed first. They would have gotten full payment for the vehicle by the end of the month. Julie Brown in the service department was unpleasant to work with from the initial appointment to the day which the service work was actually completed. Mrs. Brown's behavior towards me was very unacceptable, rude, and unprofessional. Eventually I was able to speak to the manager Mark who provided a more positive, knowledgeable, and patient experience. Taking everything into consideration I will say that the cashier upfront along with Nickolas in the sales department provided me with an exceptional customer service experience.
